Xbox could release (even) more exclusives on rival consoles

Series such as 'Halo', 'Gears of War' and 'Forza' - which have been the hallmark of Microsoft's games division - may also come to have this fate.

Xbox could release (even) more exclusives on rival consoles

Microsoft has recently decided to bring four Xbox exclusive titles to rival consoles PlayStation and Nintendo, a strategy that aims to increase profit margins as mandated by CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood.

This is according to Windows Central, which adds that Microsoft is expected to bring more Xbox-exclusive games to rival platforms in the future. The publication says that Microsoft’s approach “has no red lines,” meaning some of Xbox’s most beloved franchises — such as “Halo,” “Gears of War,” “Forza,” and more — could eventually make their way to other consoles. Considering that “Sea of Thieves” spent several days as the most popular game on the PlayStation Store, it’s clear that this strategy could boost Microsoft’s profit margins.

However, Windows Central argues that this strategy could have negative long-term consequences.

“Like so many recent strategies, this one prioritizes short-term margin gains at the expense of long-term health,” the publication reads. “Tribalism aside, there are legitimate reasons to be concerned if you’re an existing Xbox customer. Releasing exclusive games like ‘Halo,’ ‘Gears of War,’ or ‘Forza’ on PlayStation removes a reason to buy an Xbox console. If you remove the reasons to buy an Xbox console, you’re once again handing the keys to your future to other platforms, a problem Microsoft currently has with Google and Apple.”

It remains to be seen what other games Microsoft could bring to rival consoles, or even if it will do so in the near future. The company has scheduled its next showcase event for June 9, so it’s worth tuning in to see what Xbox has planned for the coming months.
