Safety of minors leads EU to investigate Facebook and Instagram
Depending on the findings of the investigation, Meta could face hefty fines.

Reuters is reporting that Meta’s social media platforms – including Facebook and Instagram – will be the subject of a new European Commission investigation focused on ensuring the platforms are complying with rules around the safety of minors.
The investigation comes as part of the Digital Services Act, which came into effect last year with the aim of combating the spread of illegal or harmful content on digital platforms.
“The Commission is concerned that Facebook and Instagram systems, including their algorithms, may incentivise addictive behaviours in children,” the statement reads, making it clear that the Commission was not satisfied with a risk assessment report Meta submitted last year. It also said the Commission had concerns about Meta’s age verification methods.
Should the Commission’s investigation conclude that Meta has not taken adequate steps to protect young users, the tech giant could face hefty fines.
