The next major update to Google's mobile operating system – Android 15 – was naturally one of the main talking points of Google's I/O event, and there's one feature in particular that's already getting people excited.
The feature in question, called Adaptive Vibration, was spotted by Android Authority in the new beta version of Android 15 that Google has released, and it relates to the way the OS handles notifications on your phone. As the name suggests, Adaptive Vibration will allow Android 15 phones to adapt the strength of their vibration motor based on the surface they're sitting on.
Using the phone's “microphone and other sensors”, Android 15 will be able to (for example) increase the intensity of the vibration if it's sitting on a sofa or other soft surface.
The idea behind Adaptive Vibration is to make sure that you don't miss an important call or message notification just because your phone is sitting on a surface where the alert might otherwise be 'muffled'.
For now, the Android 15 beta is only available on Pixel phones, but it's likely to roll out to more handsets before the end of 2024.
