EC addresses preparation for EU elections with major digital platforms
The European Commission today summoned representatives of major online platforms and search engines to ensure they live up to their responsibilities to safeguard the European elections in line with the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The Commission held a meeting with Apple, Google, LinkedIn, Meta, Microsoft, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok, Wikimedia, X and YouTube to take stock of how they are implementing the electoral guidelines under the DSA, legislation that aims to prevent illegal and harmful activities online and the spread of disinformation.
The Commission services placed particular emphasis on the platforms' preparedness to respond to incidents and the risks of generative artificial intelligence, EU sources told EFE.
Following the publication of the DSA electoral guidelines on 26 March, the Commission expects these companies to act in line with them or present alternative measures that are equally effective.
The Commission services also wanted to know if the platforms are prepared for peaks in risk following serious incidents, such as the attempted assassination of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
The companies, when asked about the precautionary measures they are taking to prevent uncontrolled disinformation and the manipulation of information around this type of event, indicated that they have increased surveillance, according to the aforementioned sources.
Brussels has three open procedures for suspected violations of DSA obligations. One against the social network X, related to the effectiveness of the measures adopted to combat the manipulation of information on the platform, and the other two against Facebook and Instagram, focused on misleading advertising and disinformation.
