Collaboration platform Slack is training artificial intelligence (AI) models on users’ messages, files, and content without their consent, with the sharing of this data enabled by default.

The alert was raised by DuckBill Group executive Corey Quinn, who shared Slack’s Privacy Principles on the social network Mastodon.

“To develop artificial intelligence/machine learning models, our systems analyze Customer Data (such as messages, content, and files) shared on Slack, as well as other information (including usage information) as set forth in the Privacy Policy and your customer agreement,” Slack’s post reads.

To make matters worse, regular users cannot disable this automatic data sharing. To do so, they must contact their company’s Slack administrator, who is the only one within the organization that can do it.

In response to the controversy, Slack shared a blog post clarifying that the company’s generative AI does not use this type of data. This information is only used to train machine learning models and, the company says, the data cannot be associated with specific users.
