Apple this week released iOS 17.5.1 for its iPhones, a new update for the handsets that fixes a bug which was causing previously deleted photos to reappear for users.

Now, Apple has explained to 9to5mac that the bug was not due to the way iCloud Photos works, but was instead caused by “database corruption”. The company clarified that the supposedly deleted photos had not actually been fully removed by their users, and has explained the best way for users to avoid the situation happening again in the future.

In order to completely delete photos and videos from your iPhone, you should go to Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, and select the option to Erase All Content and Settings.
