The families of victims of the Uvalde, Texas, massacre are suing Meta and the maker of the “Call of Duty” video game series, Activision — accusing the companies of promoting the use of weapons to minors.

The lawsuit stems from the May 24, 2022, massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, in which 18-year-old Salvador Ramos killed 21 people. The lawsuit accuses the companies of having “knowingly exposed the Shooter to the weapon, conditioned him to view it as the solution to his problems, and trained him in its use.”

The lawsuit says Ramos played “Call of Duty” obsessively, developing proficiency as a shooter and earning rewards that only became available after a substantial investment of time.

Meta has not commented on the lawsuit, but Activision has issued a statement on the matter. In a statement sent to TechCrunch, the company offered “our deepest sympathies to the families and communities that continue to be affected by this senseless act of violence,” but noted that “scientific and academic research continues to show no link between video games and gun violence.”

Activision also told The Verge that “there are millions of people around the world who enjoy video games without committing acts of violence.”
