The Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-InfraRed Experiment (PREFIRE) mission is now in orbit after launching from the U.S. space agency's Launch Complex 1 on Saturday morning.

The mission consists of two shoebox-sized CubeSats that will measure the amount of heat Earth radiates into space from two of the planet's coldest and most remote regions.

The data collected will help researchers better predict how Earth's atmosphere, oceans and climate will change as the planet warms.

"NASA's groundbreaking PREFIRE mission will fill a gap in our understanding, giving our scientists a detailed picture of how Earth's polar regions influence the amount of energy our planet absorbs and releases," Karen St. Germain, director of NASA's Earth Science Division, said in a statement.

"This will improve predictions of sea ice loss, ice sheet melt, and sea level rise, creating a clearer picture of how our planet's system will change in the coming years—critical information for farmers, fishing fleets navigating changing seas, and coastal communities building resilience," she added.

The second PREFIRE CubeSat will launch in the coming days and, after a 30-day commissioning period for both satellites, the mission is expected to last 10 months.

The PREFIRE mission aims to study the balance between the thermal energy that Earth receives from the sun and the thermal energy that Earth emits. The difference between the two determines the planet's temperature and climate.

Much of the heat radiated by the Arctic and Antarctic is emitted as far-infrared radiation, but there is currently no detailed measurement of this type of energy.
